We have put this guide together for drivers to alert them to the main differences between the roads you are used to and the roads and rules on Crete.

 

1 It is illegal not to wear a seat belt.
2 You must be over the age of 18 to drive.
3 Many pterol stations close at 7pm. Some stations accept credit cards. Unleaded is widely available. Regular unleaded petrol has an octane rating of 91 or 92; the octane rating of super is 96 or 98. Unleaded petrol is called 'amoliwdi wensin'. Unleaded super petrol has an octane rating of 95.
4 Speed limits are measured in KPH (Kilometres per Hour).

Speed Limits:

Expressways: 120 kph (75 mph) for cars and 90 kph (56 mph) for motorcycles.
Urban stretches: 110 kph (68 mph) for cars and 70 kph (44 mph) for motorcycles.
Dual carriageways: 120 kph (75 mph) for cars and 90 kph (56 mph) for motorcycles.
Outside built-up areas: 110 kph (68 mph) for cars and 70 kph (44 mph) for motorcycles.
Built-up areas: 50 kph (30 mph) for Cars, 40 kph (25 mph) for motorcycles.

6 If you are taking your own car abroad, you must display a 'country of origin' sticker (GB for British cars).
7 All British cars must be fitted with headlight converter stickers to prevent the beam of a right-hand car blinding on-coming traffic on the left.

A red light does mean stop, but not everyone will stop straight away.

9 Not all roads are smooth tarmac. Out of the major towns the road surface can be unpredictable.
